Difference Between Users, Extensions, and Phone Numbers

Users

Now a user represents a seat on the platform for each person. Users can make or take phone calls through the phone system when they have devices linked such as their cell phones or voice over IP devices.

Users also get to utilize features such as voicemail boxes, color ID numbers, do not disturb, and even music on hold.

A typical user on your system will not be able to edit your dashboard. Instead, when they log in, they will be greeted with a page that shows them their voicemails, call history, contact lists, faxes, and they're able to make a few changes to their own settings, such as their email or password. If you are in an admin on the account, you will be able to make changes from the dashboard.

Extensions

Extensions can be assigned to users, groups, and/or voicemail boxes. They usually consist of about two to four numbers.

This allows callers to reach their intended destination just by dialing that extension at a given point. When you create a user, it does ask you if they would like to be included in the company directory, which when used states their name and their direct extension.

Phone Numbers

A phone number is a unique string of digits and can be assigned as a main number for the company, a fax number, conference number, go directly to a group or even to an individual user.

New numbers can be obtained through our system by clicking on buy numbers on the spare number tab. Main numbers are what you're going to be using for setting up incoming call handling to control the customers’ journey.

Through VirtualPBX, you’re able to purchase local and toll-free phone numbers.
